[ If it took Steve a while to reply, it's mostly because he's been agonizing over what to say. Hardly anyone in his life had taken such great pains to pay attention to even the most obvious things that he's mentioned as being interested in, as wanting. It had always been Steve being the one doing these little gestures for everyone else.
So needless to say, he's deep in his emotions right now. ]
Hey man, I got your note and your gift. Just wanted to thank you, that might be the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me?
Also I'd love to do some birthday bowling. I guess whenever the sim room's free? I don't have much on my plate right now, so just let me know when and I'll meet you there.
[Aw, dude, don't get so emotional! He's already sensitive enough himself here.]
Hey, don't even sweat it! Everyone deserves something good for their birthdays, that's just a fact. Even if it's a little, uh, late! But late than never is what's important. You just give me a time and day, and I'll be there ASAP.
As busy as I USUALLY was, I'm currently working on robot fish, so you can imagine I've got oodles of time compared to when I was stopping an alien invasion in a 2-man science crew.
[ You spend enough time coming to terms with the fact that your birthday is rarely ever observed and it just becomes expected. So maybe Steve could get used to this becoming a new tradition. ]
Not that time really means as much around here between missions and all, but uh, tomorrow maybe? Seems like an afternoon kind of thing.
Wait, robot fish? Alien invasion?![ Steve's gonna need a moment here. ]I'm gonna need you to elaborate. I guess over bowling?
Tomorrow works great! I'll give me some time to wrap up on the newtetra fish.
[Normal things to say...]
It's complicated. The alien invasion, not the robot fish. The fish part is super simple actually. But I will see you, uhhhh. 2 pm sharp! If time even really matters on this station. Be there or be square, bowling boy!
[Newt will be there, simulation ready, burgers prepared! ... Yes, he didn't make them himself. Yes, he had other people help him without them knowing why. Don't worry about it.]
( Steve is learning that sometimes it's best to just smile and nod at these things. Otherwise he ends up with an electric chainsaw in his hands. )
I guess I'll sync my watch and see you then. Wouldn't want to end up a square.
( This is his life now. But it's not such a bad life, wandering over to the simulation room for what should be a fun pre-birthday celebration. Or belated birthday celebration. And while he definitely finds himself wishing his friends from Hawkins were here, he kind of is looking forward to this weird yet new chapter of his life, where people seem to be intent on going out of their way to make sure Steve feels like they care about him. )
Note + Gift Left at Steve's Door After Mission. :)
