Personality:
+++ Protective: Despite the fact that Nancy has broken up with him, that doesn't stop Steve from watching over her little brother and the rest of his nerdy friends. He doesn't even so much as ask a single question when Dustin asks for his help with his demo dog problem. And despite the fact that he didn't even know her name, Steve placed himself between him and Max's step-brother Billy, taking a plate to the face just to protect Lucas. Then when it came to being captured by the Russians, he was more vocal so that the Russians would focus on torturing him, leaving Robin to be more or less physically unharmed while he was brutalized. Finally, he volunteered himself to swim in Lover's Lake to look for the gate to the Upside Down, insisting that he go so that nobody else has to risk their lives for this.

+++ Loyal: Probably the best example of Steve's loyalty can be shown when Dustin continues to press Steve about asking Robin out. Steve could end all discussion by telling Dustin that Robin is only attracted to women, but that is not his secret to tell, and knowing how dangerous it could be to have that knowledge out there, he keeps it to himself. He also sacrifices his social status in order to defend Nancy and gives up a friendship which he would eventually trade in for a new kind of friendship with six little nuggets (now aged fifteen).

+++ Nurturing: As it turns out, Steve is terrible when it comes to dating, but excels at babysitting. This likely stems from a lack of a nurturing figure in Steve's life, so he takes care of the kids as a way to heal his own inner child. When Max is revealed to be cursed by Vecna, Steve tries his best to keep a close eye on her, and is visibly upset when she goes into her trance in graveyard, feeling like he failed to protect her. He can also be seen at the Hawkins High basketball game cheering Lucas on, as one of the only people in Lucas's life who showed up to support him for the big championship game.

--- Easily Influenced: Although he grows out of it, Steve was at one point one of the most popular guys in school. And along with hanging out with the likes of Tommy H, he did some less than savory things, like break Jonathan Byers' camera and proclaim to the town that Nancy Wheeler is a slut. After Jonathan manages to knock him down, pummeling him to a pulp, he rethinks his priorities, but it just goes to show that it takes a lot for him to shake off bad influences.

--- Below Average Intelligence: At least when it comes to school, Steve wasn't very skilled at any particular subject. His college essays were a mess, and he did not get into any school that he applied to. That isn't to say that he's that stupid, but he is a bit slower on the uptake (perhaps partially due to the number of blows he has received to his head over the years) and needs more explanation for the group's master plans than some of the rest of the nerds.

--- Insecure: Thanks to a streak of bad/neglectful parenting, it has left Steve with some insecurities. He is quick to leap to conclusions when spotting Nancy with Jonathan after she brushes off their date, and continually let Billy get the better of him when his social status as "King Steve" was threatened and ultimately decimated. He was also admittedly jealous when Dustin started hanging out with and bragging about Eddie Munson, only to later find out that Dustin wouldn't shut up about Steve to Eddie as well.

Powers/Abilities: While he does not have superpowers like Eleven, he is accomplished when it comes to sports. Most notably, he has been on the basketball and swimming teams, and has been known to swing around a bat spiked with nails at monsters from another dimension.

Regret: Not being able to kill Vecna, leaving Max pretzeled and Eddie torn apart by demobats.

Suitability: While Steve might not be the most cunning or smart of individuals, he makes up for it in other ways. There is a fierce loyalty to him, where he is willing to put his life on the line for those he cares about. He has risked his life several times, for a group of kids who he only tangentially knows through his ex-girlfriend, and for his co-worker at the time, pushing the Russians to focus on him instead of Robin when trying to extract information from him.

He could also be considered a tank, preferring close range combat with improvised weapons. While he has no special training, his agility from basketball and his swimming ability could come in handy in certain situations. While he has no military training, he would be more than happy to follow orders and stick to a mission plan than go off script.
